Rehabilitation of 25 km of water drainage channels in the Al-Buqaia Plain to mitigate flood risks in Homs Governorate.

The Homs Directorate of Water Resources has completed the clearing and rehabilitation of approximately 25 kilometers of main and secondary water drainage channels as part of the Sahl al-Buqai’a irrigation project in the Talkalakh area. This initiative was carried out as part of a proactive plan and in accordance with the directives of the General Authority for Water Resources, with the aim of enhancing drainage efficiency and mitigating flood risks during the rainy season.

The work involved removing accumulated silt, reeds, debris, and other obstructions from the drainage channels, as well as reinforcing low-lying areas. Particular attention was paid to intersections with road networks—most notably where the Rawil River meets the Homs–Tartus highway—to improve water flow and prevent bottlenecks during periods of heavy rainfall.

These efforts help protect approximately 3,334 hectares of agricultural land from inundation. Furthermore, they reduce flood risks for residential communities located near the waterways, safeguard property, and enhance public safety. The project also contributes to improved water management, minimizes water loss, and supports the safe and effective utilization of water resources.

The General Authority for Water Resources extends its gratitude to the technical staff and personnel of the Homs Directorate of Water Resources for their diligent work in clearing and rehabilitating the drainage channels, thereby ensuring the readiness of the water infrastructure to protect both agricultural lands and residential areas throughout the rainy season.
