The Directorate of Water Resources in Homs Governorate, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation, continues to carry out rehabilitation work on the Al-Hayya and Habboub Al-Reeh canals, which branch off from the Orontes River. These canals irrigate about 1,000 hectares of farmland, benefiting roughly 65,000 people. The work includes rehabilitating cross sections, building side concrete inlets with metal gates to regulate water flow and reduce losses, ensuring irrigation water reaches the farmland, and reinforcing the canal banks in low areas to make sure water flows according to actual needs. As part of monitoring the progress, the Directorate held a coordination meeting at its headquarters, attended by the Director of Water Resources, representatives from the Aga Khan Foundation, and the project’s supervising authority. During the meeting, they precisely identified the activity locations and addressed challenges to speed up the work and execute it according to the planned schedule, technical requirements, and the contract terms The project falls under the ongoing cooperation between the General Authority for Water Resources and the Aga Khan Foundation, aiming to rehabilitate the infrastructure of vital irrigation projects, support the return of agricultural activity, enable farmers to make the most of their land, and strengthen their resilience to climate changes, which will positively impact agricultural production and livelihoods in the region, and contribute to the sustainability of water resources.
