The General Authority for Water Resources' responsibilities include:
1. Managing, developing, and protecting water resources in all water basins within the Syrian Arab Republic.
2. Supervising the investment in and monitoring of water resources and water infrastructure in all water basins (Euphrates and Aleppo, Orontes, Tigris and Khabur, Barada and Awaj, Yarmouk, Coastal, and Syrian Desert).
3. Developing strategic plans to implement the approved water policy in a way that achieves comprehensive and sustainable development of water resources.
4. Determining the optimal utilization of water resources in coordination with relevant ministries and institutions.
5. Establishing mechanisms for water resource investment that ensure the prevention of pollution in all water basins, in coordination with relevant ministries.
6. Operating, maintaining, and developing its water projects and infrastructure for the Authority's various purposes.
7. Studying and designing irrigation projects and water infrastructure, establishing engineering standards for their study, implementation, and supervision, and operating them.
8. Preparing and training technical personnel in various specializations and fields, both within and outside the Syrian Arab Republic, and cooperating and coordinating with various scientific bodies to achieve the Authority's objectives.
9. Proposing draft legislation necessary to fulfill the Authority's responsibilities.
